The Karnali Zonal Hospital in Jumla was upgraded and became the Karnali Academy of Health Sciences on October 20, 2011 (2068/07/03) by an Act of the Nepalese parliament. By establishing a health institute at Jumla and a KAHS working district to produce skilled health professionals who can provide quality healthcare services and conduct health research, KAHS hopes to enable the people of backward (Pichhadiyako) areas to access quality healthcare and education at an affordable cost. The nine districts designated as backward areas under the KAHS act are the following: the remaining districts of Karnali Pradesh; Bheri Zone: Jajarkot district; Seti Zone: Bajura, Bajhang, and Achham districts; and Karnali Zone: Humla, Jumla, Kalikot, Dolpa, and Mugu districts. comprises Surkhet, Dailekh, Rukum, and Salyan in accordance with Nepal's federal structure.
Karnali Zonal Hospital was owned by the Nepali government and opened as Karnali Academy of Health Sciences, Teaching Hospital on April 17, 2069. The teaching hospital began with outpatient care, inpatient care, diagnostic services (lab, x-ray, USG, ECG, etc.), and an operating theatre in an existing building. Every year, the health care and educational services have been improved and broadened.
The Karnali Province is divided into ten districts: Jamla, Dolpa, Humla, Mugu, Kalikot, Rukum-west, Jajarkot, Salyan, and Surkeht. Karnali, which occupies 24,453 km2 (% of the total area), is the largest province in Nepal. With 1,701,800 residents (as a percentage of the total population), the province has the lowest population in the rankings. Provinces Gandaki in the east, Province No. 5 in the southeast, Province No. 7 in the west, and China in the north encircle the province.
There are mid-hills and high mountains in the north. In the north are Kanjiroba Mountain, Changla, and Kubi Gangri. The largest national park and largest lake in Nepal are Shey Phoksundo National Park and Rara Lake, both of which are situated in Karnali Pradesh. The longest and largest river in the province is the Karnali River in Nepal.
